Subject: Driver for Canon Scanner LIDE 500F
I am using XSane Image Scanner on with UBUNTU. It does not recognise my Canon Scanner -CanoScan LIDE 500F. I have tried to find a driver but this seems not to be supported. Does anybody know where to get a driver for this scanner?

No worries mate. I have shared the woe that you do now. Kind Regards p.s ive never tried this using linux myself but if you have a windows machine at home you could set it up as a printer server which will overcome the compatibility problem as you will send a request from a linux machine to a windows machine on the same network. Like i said dude its just an idea and ive never done it but ill have a gander if you want???

Thanks for the suggestion and offer. But, I will just continue to use my portable work PC when I want to scan something. (I am not able to alter the configuration of it anyway) My only home PC runs exclusively Ubuntu 7.10 and it does everything else that I need. I was trying to get away from requiring any MS OS for home use. Next time I buy a scanner I will do a bit more research on compatibility. - I still need to buy a slide photo scanner. (Canon Lide does not support mounted slides.)

There are quite a few Ubuntu Hardware Compatibility Lists https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CategoryHardware http://ubuntuhcl.org/pub/categories.php Maybe they'd be of some help. Cheers!

It is too bad that the LIDE 500F still is not supported by XSANE. Been waiting for support for at least a year now. Are there any other methods to get the LIDE 500F working?
