Subject: Problem with new install of PCLinux OS 9 & KVM
I have been using this 4-port HP 1493A KVM with Windows XP for awhile with no problems with multiple (older) computers. I have good quality cables and I don't think it is a "loss of signal" problem. I now have a dual boot Win XP and Linux OS 9 on my main machine (Intel P4 build up) and my mouse (and only the mouse) will not work correctly if the KVM is "in-line." Plugging the mouse (Logitech Marble Mouse TrackBall ONLY directly to my machine, bypassing the KVM for just the mouse, does not solve the mouse problem in OS 9. If I use a "standard" 3-button mouse, there is no improvement and the cursor icon might not even show on screen. I have to completely bypass the KVM (KB, Vid and Mouse all plugged directly into the machine). Since OS 9 works fine this way, I assume it can't be a mouse driver problem. Even when malfunctioning, the mouse does show an pointer icon on OS 9 screen but if the trackball is moved, the cursor icon moves randomly with many windows opening and closing, like a mouse driver problem. Everything in OS 9 works fine if all of the interfacing peripherals are plugged directly into my machine. I would like to continue using the KVM but I don't understand this problem and I don't know where to start on a solution. By the way, the KVM uses "Print Screen" for toggling computer changes. Thanks for any help!

I've never heard of Linux OS 9, and a google search didn't turn up anything for me. The only thing I can think is that you might have Fedora 9? Can you open a terminal, type "uname -a", (without quotes), and post the output.

Reed - I guess I should have said PCLinux OS 9. I am a newbie to Linux but this is the version that was installed on my machine - does that help identify the Linux development I am using?

Yeah, I didn't notice the title of your post. It's pclinuxos 2009 that you're using. I'm not too familiar with KVM switches, but this info might help: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/unreliable-mouse-jumps-when-using-a-kvm-switch-in-linux/ : http://www.idevelopment.info/data/Unix/Linux/LINUX_ErraticMouseBehaviorwithMouseFedoraandBelkinKVM.shtml#Newer%20Linux%20Kernels%20(2.6%20and%20higher) : You might try posting at www.linuxforums.org/forum as well; this forum is a bit dead currently.

Reed - Sounds exactly like the problem I am having. I will have to digest the links you sent and maybe get some input before I attempt to modify any potentially serious settings. Thanks so much for your reply. Sounds like this problem may be a common one with KVM switches. I can access 3 computers from one keyboard and I would like to keep the switch if possible. John
