Webtop software development with LAMP and Prism (video)

Bridging the gap between the desktop and the Internet is becoming easier and easier. In this video I show you how to create an application that looks and feels like a desktop application but runs on a typical Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP stack. The application has a back end database, is written in PHP, and uses Mozilla XUL instead of HTML. I also discuss how to use Mozilla Prism to create a streamlined version of the application that will run outside of a typical Web browser.

The video covers the following topics:

  • What is Mozilla XUL?
  • How to write a MVC (Model View Controller) PHP application that uses XUL.
  • What is Mozilla Prism?
  • How to create a Prism application.

Awesome!! This is project is definately going places. The future of the desktop is in the cloud my friends :) Firefox 3 will also have tight integration to Prism, allowing webapps to be created on the fly. As an IT ninja I would love to be able to deploy web apps to locked down linux clients to ease the deployment process as well as removing the 'web browser' at kiosk stations. -an0mally

Darn! Right now PRISM only works on Winblows and all I have is Mac and Linux. Wish they had a timeline for the Mac and Linux builds *hint hint*

All of the stuff in the video was done on Ubuntu Linux.

Excellent! Thanks for the location for the Mac and Linux builds. Have already started integrating this into my MVC framework. Have started testing my first XUL builds and am getting good results so far. Just have to tweak a few bad behaviours in the model to take into consideration this new delivery mechanism and make the output more generic.
