Ready to try Linux but want some hand-holding when you do? Here are three videos that walk you through the process of installing Kubuntu, the KDE-based version of Ubuntu.

The first video shows how Kubuntu looks running directly from live CD, and gives you a brief look at the software included on the CD. Video number two steps you through the process of installing Kubuntu to your hard drive, and video number shows you how to install and remove software in Kubuntu.

This Kubuntu video tour is the first of a series. In coming weeks and months we'll do similar tours of other popular GNU/Linux distributions, plus video tours and tutorials for many popular Linux applications.

These little Linux.com video distro tours are not intended to be comprehensive tutorials. They're here to give you an idea of the look and feel of various popular Linux distributions to help you select the one you like best.

We now make all Linux.com videos available in both Flash and Ogg Theora formats. They are distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 License, so you may download and share them, and even translate them into other languages (for non-commercial purposes) if you like.

"Installing and removing software" had some flaws:
Add/Remove program failed for some reason and focus was moved from "how to install", to wild stabs in the dark. Eventually the software got installed (btw. isn't Firefox already included in a base (K)Ubuntu install?). Overall confusing.

Suggestions on how to improve:
- If the Add/Remove isn't working due to a freak accident, do the instruction video tomorrow instead when the net/repos/update/whatever is OK.
- Use a fully updated system (the systray indicated available updates), or show how it is done and that all software is updated by this.
- Use Add/Remove, much easier than going through 100 results for "java" in Adept ... "uh, I think it's maybe this one we want"
- Demonstrate the ability to queue several applications for installation when hitting apply.
- Show that the application ended up in the menu, ready to run.
- Explain that only applications most users want are available in Add/Remove, and that Adept accesses not only those but also thousands of libraries.
- Explain that only one package manager at a time can be used.
- Max 5 minutes long.

Konqueror is the default browser in Kubuntu; Firefox is the default in Ubuntu

How have the last few Kubuntu's been? I ask because I started off using Kubuntu 606, and I was a bit dissapointed. It's not nearly given as much attention as Ubuntu, unfortunately. I mean, Konqueror as a default web browser, even though the windows version of firefox is actually on the install cd! Bewildering..Also, never did like Adept. Not at all.

Wouldn't it be nice, if the person who did this tour would actually know what he's doing?

Mixed feelings about this video tour. It could have been a lot shorter with proper editing. For example, I would edit out the failed Adept attempts of Java (some like myself may find it funny, others may not as obvious in a previous comment), which I would add in another section. I understand that this may be a typical "error" for a fresh install, and that it is a sample troubleshooting lesson, so I forgive you :). Overall a Good/O.K. presentation.

I love how he says that with linux when you uninstall software they're completely gone. Except just after he says that the Kopete icon is still there...
