I agree, I have been using Express since the 2.0 days. I am running 2.0 now at a few of my remote sites, I have 10 remote sites running on Express 2 and 3 connected to an Advanced SmoothWall FireWall 2008 machine via IPSec VPN. The ease of setup and configuring, plus the low to no cost is why I use SmoothWall.

I have found most of the issues with setting up and using is from personal limitations on how this type of Networking software works, not so much of the limitations of the software itself. The more you try and experiment the better off you are.
