I haven't encountered a need for this

I've used Debian for eight years, and its package management seems to work pretty darned well, whether on "stable", "testing", or "unstable".

Anything I compile and install on my own goes under /usr/local, as per recommendations.

"But what about software you need that isn't in Debian - shouldn't that be handled with a package manager as well?"

Perhaps, but in the long run the answer is to get everything we need into Debian.
