LDAP should also be mentioned here. One can let users authenticate to a LDAP server by using the module pam_ldap.so. LDAP is mainly used for a centralized user authentication server, providing the same UIDs and GID's across a network. More on LDAP: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightweight_Directory_Access_Protocol.
