A comparative look at compact sysadmin distributions

I've been looking for a replacement for Knoppix which hasn't been updated in some time and is missing niceties like ntfs-3g. Unfortunately the thing that seems to be missing on a lot of rescue systems is remote filesystem support, like smbfs or sshfs. Not much good rescuing files if I can't get them to another machine, is it?
I haven't looked at RIP, though. I suppose I should just learn to make my own bootCD so it can be what I want.
