You can explain to them: is like having an accountant working for you and writing all your data in a secret language, so you can not read it and are forced to depend on him ("your data as hostage"). Normally when you ask him, the accountant tells you what you want, in English. But whenever he wants, he increases the quantity of money you have to pay to him, and forces to pay him whenever he thinks it's better for him. He also does it with your government, so you have to pay even more money in taxes.
Now replace "accountant" with "Microsoft program" and "he" with Microsoft.

People care as long as it works? :-) Yes, normally it works, but, what an oppressive way :-( knowing there are free/libre programs.
