However, your first sentence in the last paragraph is crucial. Existing codecs like Theora and Dirac are outperformed by standards like H.264 as of today, and I still want to see a codec which is technologically state of the art. Sun should focus on that.

On the other hand, good old JPEG is so 80s now (ok, 90s), but it is the de facto standard in modern browsers still. Maybe a basic but working video codec will be enough such that people will stick to it.
