The non-hardware Watch Now is an in-browser, IE6-only WMP-only DRM plugin (or ActiveX control or whatever the IE equivalent is; I haven't touched that browser in years). I'm sure it is Windows-only purely because Netflix bought an end-to-end content delivery system from Microsoft. I agree that it sucks that Linux and Mac users get zilch, but it's not a case of Netflix _refusing_ to support Linux, it's a case of Netflix having purchased a system whose supplier (Microsoft) refuses to build support for anything else.
