Yeah this is a great game, I too am running a similar setup Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy and Restricted Nvidia drivers but with 2 Monitors, and had resolution problems when starting the game, but I have another solution which I find easier, after you launch the game hit Alt+Enter to change to windowed mode than go into system settings in the game and change the resolution and change "Full Screen" back to "Yes".
