And once more, an article about audio converters on linux.com fails to mention one of the greatest command-line tools: sox. It understands MP3, OGG and FLAC too, among other common formats and is very useful to manipulate audio files in various ways. For example, to make very small MP3 files, I often use it to mix them to mono and resample them at 16kHz. That's not great quality, but if you're for example dealing with an hour-long interview that you like to put on your portable player, it's exactly what you need!
