Its never worked before and this new compositor is completely new code.

You most certainly do not. Memory usage is higher but not by a significant amount. Currently my metacity with 35 windows on screen is using about 10megabytes of RAM in itself and has about 25meg of pixmaps on the X server.
What you do need is an X driver that has a good XRender implementation but thats hardly metacity's fault.
