Stellarium is actually a pretty useful program for finding what star you're seeing in the sky currently. I also used it for something more practical recently. I was able to determine approximately when Google had driving their van through Bloomington, IN according to when the sun was perfectly East in the sky and approximating the time. I could narrow it down to a few weeks.
