Yeah, I wrote mgzip for speed at a time when most multi-cpu machines were in the 500Mhz range, thus the decision to default to -2 instead of -6. I was trying to get the fastest possible compress times out of my hardware and -2 made sense at the time. Anyway... there wasn't much interest back then, but maybe with multi-core becoming mainstream, someone else will pick it up and run with it.
