I used this a few years ago and found it to work absolutely fine. As a backup solution it may not be the professionals choice but if you have a camcorder with DV IN lying around then you have a low cost option.
As for DVDs as backup solution I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole unless they were DVD-RAM in a cartridge.
If you want proper backup the only solution is to use proper backup tapes. Disks of any tape seem to be too fragile for my liking.
