nitpicking : "even if you don't have an original CD, which allows you to use the CDDB service." : the cd_id is calculated based on tracks lengths and order (and number of tracks). So, if for instance you have some album ripped in its own directory, you don't need the original cd device anymore.

Some tagging softwares can handle directories-as-album and query CDDB without CD. Speaking about them, Kid3 can do this, and also support querying MusicBrainz, Discogs, Gnudb/CDDB, Tracktype...
