"security by obscurity" is a valid method, one that people too-often dismiss. Its not perfect or even great, but its valid and has its place. Is it the answer? No, no more than hiding a key under the rock out front of your apartment. It still happens and its still useful.
Most scans would be of well known ports, not high-numbered generally-unused ports. Unless you are a specific target, it is unlikely that the port would be scanned that high, and the attacker would move on.
