"The reduced availability is caused by the lower quality of the commodity, PC hardware that we buy as well as an expected shorter working lifetime for PC equipment than our old Suns....."

In our facility, Sun hardware fails just as often as Dell/HP. Ever opened up a Sun server? Many of the components are made by the same companies in the same manufacturing sites in China/Korea/Taiwan. Broadcom chipsets are a good example. Unless you have clear evidence that Sun somehow sources higher quality components, all we have is anecdotal evidence.

"We have noticed that the Linux TCP stack seems to be slower and of lower quality than the Solaris TCP stack. "

Maybe, but you're just trolling unless you have something to back that up.
