I totally agree with you. Running Debian Sid here and applying every update available i never had a problem: apt is an excellent system and just refuses to install package that have unresolved dependencies (don't know about RPM, though).
Windows world is different: less you let your system to "call home", more the chance of your private info does not sent to M$.
