Hardware vendors never very rarely releases firmware updates with the exception of motherboards which usually have couple BIOS updates. But the BIOS you can often update without an operating system at all, just put the firmware on a floppy and press like Alt+F2 at start of computer.
Other firmware you can also update under DOS. Maybe FreeDOS works. <a href="http://www.freedos.org/" title="freedos.org">http://www.freedos.org/</a freedos.org>
