I switched out of curiousity and desire for more network power than windows when internet took over for the local BBs scene. Having grown up with family computers from dos to win2k. I'd explored all the operating systems I could get my hands on until someone gave me a huge thick book with a cd in the back.

My first Linux was Slackware with a rather unpleasent install process and reluctance to read the manual but I was young and spoiled on pictures so long after retirnment of dos. Now, I can't remember the last time I build a machine with only one booting OS.

I gotta tell ya, the diversity of applications is part of the apeal for me. There's no one solution for everyone and you can see it in each personal "perfect config". I can understand the desire for more uniformity but it is a daunting dream with the array of hardware the kernel runs on.
