Evidently some of the lab's sponsors must've started asking questions like: what are all these people doing? Working on carrier grade Linux? Mobile Linux? Gee, those don't sound like projects that have any relevance to my company. Can't they be better managed by for-profit startups releasing code under a dual license? And what are we getting for our money anyway?

Now, the big players do care that Linus Torvalds doesn't go to work for one of their rivals, but a 30 person outfit is a bit much just to ensure that Linus remains employed by a high-tech Switzerland. Maybe some college like UC Berkeley or Stanford can offer him a research job.
