That idea strikes me as very clever. It assumes that you know that's how the version number works, but - as you point out - takes out a LOT of guess-work about what exactly has changed, and whether it is compatible with earlier versions.

Of course, the documentation is the place to go into detail about what has changed, but I for one would prefer to be able to just glance through the version numbers on SourceForge or whatever and take a punt on that - without downloading all the documentation and wading through that too. This is especially true if I just want to fulfil a dependency for something else I want to get working. The less reading and shyte I have to do for each link in the chain, the better.
