I agree with you. One correction: Word for Windows 6.0 was actually numbered such to synch with the *Mac* version, because the Mac version has always been WYSIWYG. Your point is still valid, though.

Here's even more fuel for the fire. Sadly, Word for DOS 6.0 and Word for Windows 6.0, I found, used different file formats. I learned this when I gave my Dad Word for DOS 6.0 and he tried to read some WinWord 6.0 files. Didn't work. So MS wasn't even consistent, file-format-wise, within the same version number!

So, while version numbers can be somewhat confusing to the uninitiated, even in the Free Software world, Microsoft is much more egregious about confusion and switching up on folks than most Free Software projects are. Besides, I prefer OpenOffice.org anyway because, for what I do, it gets in my way less and preserves my freedom much more than MS Word.
