WinME was not a cross between Win2000 and Win98 (despite what Microsoft marketting had told the world). It was Win98 -DOS Mode, +a few minor features, +a few more drivers. Also, the first version of NT was Windows NT 3.1 (and was that version to try and convince people that it was compatible with Windows 3.1).

There's also the Microsoft Word version number nonsense.
Word for Windows 1.x
Word for Windows 2.x
Word for Windows 6.0 (to synch with the DOS version number which had sequentially gone from 1.0 to 6.0 previously)
Word 95
Word 97
Word 2000
Word XP
Word 2003
