The people writing the software you use everday care.
One of the fine distinctions between marketers and engineers is that marketers will assign a number based on "feel good" value, whereas engineers strive to find a number which communicates something specific to the user. As the article's author points out, this is a frustrating exercise, and no single, perfect solution has been found. It is only through discussions like these that we even have a chance of finding one.
