IIRC, didn't all the versioning-as-marketing start with Sybase vs. Oracle, when Sybase took a hint from Spinal Tap (ours goes to 11!)?
And then there's Sun. Solaris 10 is actually Solaris 2.10, but if you do uname -a on a Sun box you'll see it's actually SunOS 5.10, to make it consistent with the original SunOS which went to version 4...
