I'm running FreeBSD-5 on amd64 for a longer period of time. I've got no crashes at all.
Of course, I have 32-bit compatibility layer (for both: FreeBSD and its 64 bits Linux emulation).
I don't understand the part about ports, either. I've got full working environment (KDE3.4, Gnome 2.10 and XFCE4.2.1 together with all my development utils and productivity suites like evolution and openoffice).
Please get your system working. This is really emerassing!
