At least part of the problems the author cites on FreeBSD are not AMD64 specific. I too had stability problems running with a Yukon Gigabit Ethernet chipset on FreeBSD 5.3Beta or 5.2.1 (in my case, a P4 at 2.4 GHz system)... the machine didn't crash, but the NIC would stop responding. A ifconfig down followed by ifconfig up (issued from the console) would fix things again. And this only occured during large data transfers (FTP, scp)... interactive ssh sessions wouldn't cause problems. Fedora Core 3 on the same system seems to be rock solid.
